Water flows on and on without ceasing. The centered one maintains constant virtue in heart and conduct, and carries on the work of teaching.

Classical (Legge)Water flowing on continuously forms the repeated Khan. The superior man, in accordance with this, maintains constantly the virtue (of his heart) and (the integrity of) his conduct, and practises the business of instruction.

The Changing Lines

Six at the beginning

The abyss repeated. He enters a cavern within the gorge. Misfortune.

Classical (Legge)Repetition of the Khan. (The subject of this line has) entered the cavern within the gorge. There will be evil.

Nine in the second place

All the peril of the defile surrounds him. He will gain a little of the deliverance he seeks.

Classical (Legge)He is in all the peril of the defile. He will, however, get a little (of the deliverance) that he seeks.

Six in the third place

Coming or going, a defile at every turn. Peril and unrest. His efforts lead him into the cavern of the pit. No action should be taken.

Classical (Legge)Whether he comes or goes, he is confronted by a defile. All is peril (to him) and unrest. (His endeavours will) lead him into the cavern of the pit. There should be no action (in such a case).

Six in the fourth place

A bottle of spirits, a basket of rice, simple earthenware vessels passed through the window. In the end, no error.

Classical (Legge)(Nothing but) a bottle of spirits and a subsidiary basket of rice (are employed). The (simple) earthenware (is passed through) the window. There will in the end be no error.

Nine in the fifth place

The water in the defile has not yet filled it. It rises only to the middle. No error.

Classical (Legge)The water in the defile has not yet filled it; it is rising only to the middle. There will be no error.

Six at the top

Bound with cords of three strands or two, placed in a thicket of thorns. For three years he does not find his way. Misfortune.

Classical (Legge)(The subject) is bound with cords of three strands or two strands, and placed in the thicket of thorns. But in three years he does not learn the course for him to pursue. There will be evil.
