The Judgment
Humility brings progress and success. The centered one carries things through to completion.
Classical (Legge)Khien indicates progress and success. The superior man, (being humble as it implies), will have a (good) issue (to his undertaking).
The Image
A mountain in the midst of the earth. Qian. One who is centered diminishes what is excessive and augments what is deficient, bringing things into balance.
Classical (Legge)(The trigram representing) the earth, and (that representing) a mountain in the midst of it, form Khien. The superior man, in accordance with this, diminishes what is excessive, and augments what is deficient, bringing about an equalization, according to the nature of the case.
The Changing Lines
The centered one adds humility to humility and crosses the great stream. Good fortune.
Classical (Legge)The superior man, being (additionally) humble, uses (his qualities) in crossing the great stream. There will be good fortune.
Humility finds voice. Firm and correct brings good fortune.
Classical (Legge)He utters his humility. With firm correctness there will be good fortune.
The centered one of acknowledged merit, still maintaining humility, carries things to a happy conclusion. Good fortune.
Classical (Legge)The superior man of (acknowledged) merit, but still maintaining humility, will carry (everything) to a happy conclusion. There will be good fortune.
Humility displayed in every movement. All things are advantageous.
Classical (Legge)He displays his humility in every movement. There will be nothing but what is advantageous.
Employing neighbors without boasting of wealth. The use of force is favorable. All movements are advantageous.
Classical (Legge)He employs his neighbours, without boasting of his wealth. It will be advantageous to use force (even). There will be nothing that will not be advantageous.
Humility has become known. The hosts may be set in motion, yet only to discipline one's own city and state.
Classical (Legge)His humility has become known. He may (with advantage) put his hosts in motion; but (he is only) to punish his own towns and state.
